How Far Ahead to Book Marrakech, Season by Season

The Ministry of Culture runs its own ticketing platform, live since 3 April 2025, and it sells the Bahia, El Badi, the Saadian Tombs, the Almoravid Koubba and the Menara pavilion. Read any of those pages and you will find a tariff, a set of hours and a free-entry rule, and you will not find a calendar of hours to choose from. The ticket is dated at best. There is a minimum of one ticket per order and no timed inventory, which means the online ticket and the gate ticket are the same object at the same price.

The practical consequence is worth stating bluntly, because it saves money and anxiety. A reseller offering to sell you "skip the line" entry to a Marrakech state monument is selling you a place in the same queue, because there is only one queue and it is a queue for a till, not for a door with a time on it. The state tariff is $10.65 (100 MAD) for a foreign adult at all four of those monuments, and the ticket index puts the official row first on every table for that reason.

The three authorities that are not the Ministry

The madrasa is sold by the Ministere des Habous on its own site at $5.33 (50 MAD) for a foreign adult, and it is not on the state culture platform at all, which is why searching one platform for everything comes up short. The Fondation Jardin Majorelle sells the garden and the fashion museum on its own shop and is the outlier: online only, named ticket, tied to a time, and it says explicitly that it takes no responsibility for tickets bought anywhere else. And a scatter of private and foundation venues, from the photography house to the restored riad garden in the medina, simply sell at the door.

So when someone asks how far ahead to book Marrakech, the accurate answer is: three of the four systems need no lead time at all, and the fourth needs a few days in high season.

March, April and May, and again October and November: the pressure months

This is when Marrakech is genuinely busy, and it is easy to see why: April averages a daily high of 24.7 C and October 28.0 C, which is the weather people came for. Book a bed four to eight weeks out in these months and book the Gueliz garden as soon as your dates are fixed, because the early slots go and there is no door to walk up to. Everything else still works on the day.

If your window is a weekend in April, add a day of margin to any coach plan, because the coast run is the busiest scheduled service out of the city.

June to September: the heat does the rationing

July averages a daily high of 36.6 C and August 36.2 C, with effectively no rain, 2.7 mm and 5.5 mm respectively. Beds are easier and cheaper, and nothing needs booking except the transport out. What the heat does instead is compress the usable day: the monuments are worth doing between 09:00 and 11:00, the middle of the day belongs to a courtyard or a pool, and the square comes back to life after dark.

That shape is built into the one-day route. One warning that belongs here rather than in the weather section: the valleys south of the city flood in summer as well as winter, and 25 per cent of recorded floods on the Ourika have come in summer storms, which is set out in our day-trip comparison.

December to February: cold mornings, full weeks

January averages a daily high of 18.1 C and a daily low of 3.8 C, which surprises people who packed for Africa. Riads are frequently unheated, and this is the quarter with the most rain days, five or so a month. Booking pressure comes from two specific events rather than from the season: the film festival, which ran 20 to 28 November 2026 according to the Centre Cinematographique Marocain, and the marathon, which is Sunday 31 January 2027 with the marathon off at 07:45 and the half at 09:15 from Place de la Koutoubia.

The organiser claims more than 15,000 runners. Bib collection runs on the two preceding days at the same place, which means the medina is busy from the Friday. If your dates touch either, book the bed months out and expect the streets around the Koutoubia to be closed on the Sunday morning.

Ramadan is the single biggest variable in a Marrakech calendar and it cannot be printed with confidence. Every Islamic date in Morocco is confirmed by the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs after physical observation of the crescent, about a day ahead, which is why no Moroccan government site publishes a forward Gregorian date. The UK Foreign Office says the next Ramadan starts in February 2027 and Global Affairs Canada expects it to begin on or around 7 February 2027. Treat both as estimates and check again closer to the time.

What changes during it: opening hours shift at some venues, the medina garden moves to 09:30 to 16:30, restaurant service reorganises around sunset, and the square is at its most extraordinary in the hour after the fast breaks. It is not a reason to cancel a trip. It is a reason to book flexible accommodation and to read what to wear before you go.

The other moving pieces are the religious public holidays. Morocco publishes 17 paid holidays a year, ten of them on fixed dates and four of them Islamic and therefore floating. The relevant rule for a visitor is a ticketing one: Moroccan nationals enter the state monuments free on the first day of national and religious holidays as well as every Friday, which makes those mornings the fullest of the year at the palace gates. Marrakech is a 2030 World Cup host city. FIFA's member associations appointed Morocco, Portugal and Spain at an extraordinary congress on 11 December 2024, and Marrakech is one of Morocco's six host cities, at the Grand Stade. The stadium is being taken from about 41,000 seats to 46,000, with the second phase of the rebuild removing the athletics track, reshaping the bowl and adding a full roof, and completing at the end of 2028. Match dates for the city are not stated.

It has already had a rehearsal. The Grand Stade hosted eight matches at the Africa Cup of Nations between 21 December 2025 and 18 January 2026, including a round of sixteen tie and a quarter-final. The practical read for anyone planning a trip in the second half of this decade is simple: hotel capacity in this city will be under pressure in ways that have nothing to do with the weather, and the usual advice about booking a bed a month out will not survive a tournament. Everything else on this page, including the fact that the palaces still sell a ticket at a window, is unaffected.

Also on the walk-up list, and more useful than it sounds: the hammams, the cooking classes and the food walks, most of which run daily and take a booking the same afternoon. If a plan collapses because of weather, that is the substitution to make, and the tours hub is arranged so those alternatives are one click from whatever you were going to do instead.

What is not on this list, and needs saying one final time: the Gueliz garden, and any coach seat on a specific departure. Two things. That is the whole of what an advance booking buys you in Marrakech.
