Day Trips from Marrakech

Day trips from Marrakech divide on one question the tour listings never print: whether a scheduled coach actually goes there. Two of the eight destinations on this page are served by the national carriers, seven times a day and four times a day; four of them are served by nobody at all; and one is 553 km east and cannot be done in a day by any means. This page sets the eight side by side on free-flow driving time, on the cheapest organised day and on the do-it-yourself fare where one exists, with every carrier figure read in Supratours' and CTM's own booking systems. The city pages of this guide start at the Marrakech index, the shortest run out of town is the Agafay hills, and the longest is Merzouga.

Quick answer Which destinations have a coach, what each costs, and which one is not a day trip

Of the eight destinations on this page, exactly two are reachable on a scheduled coach: Essaouira, seven times a day at $10.65 (100 MAD) in 3 h 00, and Ouarzazate for Ait Ben Haddou, four times a day at $11.72 (110 MAD). Ouzoud, Azilal, Imlil, Asni, the Ourika valley and Agafay appear in neither national network, and Merzouga is 553 km out.

Key takeaways

The Eight Destinations, on Drive Time and the Do-It-Yourself Fare

Every destination this guide covers, set against the free-flow driving time from Jemaa el-Fna, the cheapest organised day listed on GetYourGuide in Q3 2026, and the scheduled fare where a carrier publishes one.

Destination Drive each way Cheapest organised day Do it yourself Best for
Agafay 26.5 km, about 35 min $16.59 No coach and no published taxi fare An afternoon, a sunset and dinner
Ourika valley 62.7 km, about 1 h 21 $13.27 No coach; shared grand taxi, fare negotiated River, walnut terraces and a short walk
Atlas Mountains 48.3 km to Asni, about 57 min $22.78 No coach into the park; six gates stop vehicles A full walking day in the High Atlas
Imlil 68.3 km, about 1 h 28 $27.87 No coach past Asni; 1,170 vehicles a day use the last 16 km A trailhead village and mule tracks
Ouzoud falls 159.5 km, about 3 h 01 $14 No carrier at all; nearest served town Beni Mellal, $9.05 (85 MAD) Waterfalls, at the price of six hours in a van
Essaouira 183.7 km, about 2 h 41 $14.82 Supratours 7 a day, $10.65 (100 MAD), 3 h 00 The one you can do on public transport
Ait Ben Haddou 170.7 km, about 3 h 23 $25 Coach to Ouarzazate $11.72 (110 MAD); last 30 km unserved A World Heritage ksar over the pass
Merzouga 553.5 km, about 10 h 05 $125.30, and it runs three days Train and night coach, $47.90 (450 MAD), 15 h 25 The Sahara, on two nights minimum

Where the fourth column says no coach, that is a verified absence from the operator's own station list rather than an omission here. Driving distances and free-flow times were computed with the public OSRM routing service over OpenStreetMap data in Q3 2026; the Atlas row uses Asni, the last town on the regional road before the park. Tour prices are the GetYourGuide listings read the same day, in the dollars the platform shows. Carrier fares are the live figures returned by the Supratours and CTM booking systems for real departure dates, converted at 1,000 MAD = $106.52.

The Eight, Grouped by How Far the Road Goes

Sort with the chips, or read them in order: the list runs from the half-day on the city's doorstep to the one that needs two nights. Every entry is numbered to the pin on the map below it, and every price is the cheapest listing for that destination in Q3 2026.

Half a day, under an hour out

  1. Agafay

Stone hills and camps from $16.594 to 7 hoursbook-ahead tier 2 of 3

A commune of 17,771 people 26.5 km from Jemaa el-Fna, sold as a desert and reached on tracks that appear in no classified road register. There is no fee and no gate; what you buy is a camp's evening.

Tip: Take the afternoon departure rather than a morning one. Nothing here is worth midday light, and every camp builds its programme around sunset.

One full day in the mountains

  1. Ourika Valley

River valley and waterfalls from $13.277 to 8 hoursbook-ahead tier 2 of 3

Setti Fatma sits at kilometre point 59 of provincial road RP 2017, not the 30 km the internet repeats, and the last stretch of that road carries 6,666 vehicles a day. The walk above the village is a river path, not a mountain one.

Tip: Cheapest of all eight and the shortest real mountain day. Watch the water rather than the sky if you are eating in the streambed.

  2. Atlas Mountains

National park and walking from $22.788 to 9 hoursbook-ahead tier 2 of 3

Toubkal National Park, created in 1942 and taking around 40,000 visitors a year by its own management plan. No entry fee is published, six gates mark where vehicles stop, and the day trips stay in the valleys below the snow line.

Tip: The organised walking day is the cheapest way into the park, because the transport is the whole cost and there is nothing to pay at the boundary.

  3. Imlil

    Trailhead village from $27.878 to 9 hoursbook-ahead tier 2 of 3

The end of the tarmac at 64.8 km by classified road, summed from official section lengths: 31.00 km to Tahannaout, 17.80 km on to Asni, then 16.00 km of provincial road carrying 1,170 vehicles a day.

Tip: Go for the walking, not the village. If you want a sight rather than a base, the Ourika valley gives more in the same hours.

The long single days

  1. Ouzoud Falls

    Waterfalls from $1410 to 12 hoursbook-ahead tier 2 of 3

The province's own page places the falls at 1,060 metres and calls them among the highest in Morocco, which is more careful than the height figure everyone else prints. No carrier serves Ouzoud, Azilal or Demnate.

Tip: Six to seven hours of driving for two or three hours on site. Worth it in spring, hard to justify in a heatwave.

  2. Essaouira

    Walled Atlantic port from $14.8211 to 12 hoursbook-ahead tier 1 of 3

A UNESCO-inscribed medina of 56.7 hectares that charges nothing to enter, and the only destination here with a proper timetable behind it: seven Supratours coaches a day, 3 h 00 each way, on the hour or half hour from 07:30 to 19:00.

Tip: The one to do independently. Take the 07:30 out and the 18:30 back and you have the town for seven hours instead of four.

  3. Ait Ben Haddou

    World Heritage ksar from $2510 to 12 hoursbook-ahead tier 2 of 3

A 3.03-hectare earthen ksar inscribed in 1987, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Four coaches a day reach Ouarzazate, 30 km short of it, and the final leg appears in no carrier's network on either side.

Tip: This is the day where an organised trip earns its price, because the part no timetable covers is the part you cannot arrange from the city.

Longer than a day, whatever the sign says

  1. Merzouga and Erg Chebbi

    Sahara dunes from $125.303 daysbook-ahead tier 3 of 3

553.5 km by road, about ten hours of driving each way. CTM does not serve it at all, and the only itinerary the rail operator will sell is a train to Meknes plus a night coach, arriving at 06:00 on day two.

Tip: Book the three days or drop it. Anyone selling you the Sahara and back in a day is selling you the Agafay under another name.

Numbers match the list — tap a pin for the guide.

Coordinates are the Wikidata reference points for each destination, except Merzouga, which uses the GPS of the Supratours terminal published in the carrier's own station list. Verified in Q3 2026.

What the Two National Carriers Actually Run

Morocco has two intercity coach operators of any size: Supratours, a subsidiary of the national rail company ONCF, and CTM. Their networks are not the same shape, and the difference decides which of these days you can do on your own. The figures below were pulled from each operator's own booking system for real departure dates.

Read the grid the way a traveller reads it, from the left. A corridor with a fare and a frequency is a day you can build yourself. A corridor with the words not in the network is a day where the vehicle is the product, and the tour price is buying transport that does not otherwise exist.

CorridorSupratoursCTMJourney timeWhat it means here

Essaouira, the One Corridor with a Real Timetable

The Essaouira corridor deserves its own sentence, because it is the one place where the independent option is genuinely better than the organised one. Supratours leaves Marrakech at 07:30, 09:00, 10:30, 12:00, 15:00, 17:00 and 19:00, and comes back at 07:00, 09:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:30, 17:00 and 18:30, every service direct and every service 3 h 00. CTM runs a single 08:30 out and a single 17:00 back.

So the coach passenger picks the first departure and the last return and gets about eight hours in the town, while the coach tour gets there at half past ten and leaves in the middle of the afternoon.

Where Neither Carrier Goes at All

In the other direction the absence is the story. Neither operator lists Ouzoud, Azilal, Demnate, Tanant, Afourer, Bin El Ouidane, Imlil, Asni or Agafay anywhere in its network. That is not a gap in this research: it is a verified absence from the station registers both companies publish through their own booking engines.

Beni Mellal is the closest either gets to the falls, and the Ourika and Rheraya valleys are served by shared grand taxis whose fares no commune, province or ministry publishes.

One more thing the booking systems settle. There is no train to any of these places. Every Marrakech to Essaouira and Marrakech to Ouarzazate service inside the rail operator's own system is coded as a coach rather than a train, and Marrakech is the southern terminus of the rail network for this whole corridor.

If a page offers you day trips from Marrakech by train, it is describing something that does not exist.

Casablanca, and Why No Train Figure Appears on This Page

Two of the things people search for around this page are a Casablanca day trip and a day trip by train, and both run into the same wall. Marrakech is the southern terminus of the national rail network, so a train can only take you north, and Casablanca is the nearest large city on that line; south and west of here, including the Essaouira corridor, every service the rail operator sells is a Supratours coach rather than a train, which its own booking system confirms by filing them under the coach range. What this guide cannot give you is the number.

Every ONCF address we tried refused the connection or served a certificate that would not verify, so no fare and no journey time for a Marrakech to Casablanca train is published here rather than copied from a blog. Buy that leg at the station counter on Avenue Hassan II, where the day's timetable is the authority, and treat Casablanca as an overnight rather than a day out.

Frequencies, fares and journey times pulled live from the Supratours timetable and availability APIs and the CTM booking engine for departure dates in September and October 2026, read in Q3 2026. Network coverage checked against Supratours' 177-station list and the 119-city network embedded in CTM's booking engine.

What an Organised Day Costs Against Doing It Yourself

The instinct is that the tour is the expensive option. On four of these corridors it is not, and on two of them the return coach fare alone is higher than the whole guided day. Here is the arithmetic, using the cheapest listing for each destination and the carriers' own return fares.

The comparison only works where a fare exists to compare against, so the table below covers the four corridors that have one. On the other four there is no published figure at all, which is itself the answer: you are negotiating, and nobody can tell you the number in advance.

DestinationCheapest organised dayScheduled return fareThe gapWhat the gap actually buys
Essaouira$14.82$21.30 (200 MAD) on SupratoursThe coach costs $6.48 moreNothing. Take the coach for the extra hours, not to save money
Ait Ben Haddou$25$23.40 (220 MAD) to OuarzazateAbout level, before the last legThe 30 km from Ouarzazate that no carrier covers
Ouzoud$14$18.11 (170 MAD) to Beni MellalThe tour is $4.11 cheaperEverything after Beni Mellal, which is unserved
Ourika valley$13.27No published fare of any kindNot computableThe taxi negotiation, and a guide on the waterfall path

What the Gap Actually Buys

Two conclusions come out of that table and they point in opposite directions. On Essaouira the independent trip is worth its extra dirhams because it buys hours, not comfort: eleven in the town against four. On Ouzoud and Ait Ben Haddou the organised day is both cheaper and the only thing that reaches the site, because the last leg of each is on nobody's timetable and no official source names a grand-taxi fare for it.

The Four Corridors with No Published Fare

A warning about the four unpriced corridors. Every blog that quotes you a firm dirham figure for a shared grand taxi to Setti Fatma, to Imlil or out to a camp in the Agafay is quoting a guess. The Commune de Marrakech publishes nothing on grand-taxi stands or fares, no province or ministry publishes a shared-seat tariff for any of these routes, and the only rule that is actually published is that a petit taxi inside the city must run its meter.

Agree the whole-car price before the doors close, in dirhams, for the return as well as the outward run.

For the same reason the cheapest listing is not always the right buy. On the Ourika day the $13.27 trip and the $17.80 one both run seven hours and both include lunch, and the difference is what the itinerary adds around the waterfall walk. On the Essaouira day the two products differ by about an hour and a dollar.

Compare what each one removes from your day rather than the headline figure, because on these corridors the headline figures are all within a few dollars of each other anyway.

Return fares are twice the one-way figures returned by the carriers' own booking systems in Q3 2026: Supratours Marrakech to Essaouira 100 MAD, Supratours to Ouarzazate 110 MAD, CTM to Beni Mellal 85 MAD. Tour prices are the GetYourGuide listings read the same day. Dollar figures at 1,000 MAD = $106.52. No Moroccan authority publishes a grand-taxi tariff for any route on this page.

Which Day Trip, by the Time You Have

Most people planning a Marrakech stay have two spare days rather than eight, so the useful question is not which destination is best but which one fits the hole in the plan. The last column is the do-it-yourself version of the same day, because on half of these corridors it exists.

Door-to-door hours below are the operators' own stated durations where the product states one, and our routing where it does not. They include the drive at both ends, which is the number the listings tend to bury.

Our Pick, If You Only Have One Day Out

If you only have one day out of the city, take the Ourika valley. It is the cheapest, the closest real landscape, it needs no negotiation once the trip is booked, and it leaves you back in Marrakech in time for the square. If you have two, add Essaouira and do it on the coach rather than in a van.

If you have three and want the thing that looks least like anywhere else, the ksar over the Tizi n'Tichka is worth its seven hours of road.

The one combination that does not work is trying to pair two of the long days back to back. Ouzoud, Essaouira and Ait Ben Haddou each take ten to twelve hours door to door, and two of those consecutively leaves nothing of the city itself, which is what most people came for. The list of what is inside the walls is longer than this page and none of it involves six hours in a minibus.

Durations from the operators' own product listings on GetYourGuide, read in Q3 2026, and from the driving times computed for the comparison table above. Coach times from the carriers' own booking systems.

The Four Destinations No Coach Reaches, and What That Costs You

Half the destinations on this page exist outside the scheduled network altogether. That changes how you should read their prices, because on those corridors the tour is not a convenience purchase, it is the transport.

The Agafay hills are the clearest case. The road register that numbers every classified road in the country contains no Agafay entry at all, and the tracks that run from the surrounding provincial roads into the camp area are not in the classified network. Neither carrier lists a stop at Agafay, Tameslouht, Lalla Takerkoust or Amizmiz.

So there is no fare to compare, no stand that any official source names, and no way to arrive except a vehicle you have arranged.

The Ourika and Rheraya valleys are the second case, and there the absence is stranger, because the roads are busy. The last section of the Ourika road carries 6,666 vehicles a day and the road up to Imlil carries 1,170, so these are not empty tracks. They are simply served by shared grand taxis rather than by scheduled coaches, and the shared-taxi layer is the part of Moroccan transport that publishes nothing: no tariff, no timetable, no stand register.

Ouzoud is the third, and the most awkward, because the site itself is a national destination. The Province d'Azilal publishes a page about the falls and concedes in another that its tourism potential still needs basic infrastructure, access roads among them. Its entire road network is 1,061 km of which one national road crosses the province for 26.98 km.

Neither carrier serves Ouzoud, Azilal or Demnate, and Beni Mellal, the closest town on either network, is still about 50 km away in a straight line.

The practical consequence is the same in all three cases: compare the tour against not going, not against a fare. And if you would rather stay inside the walls, the ticketed monuments are all within a walk of each other and every one of them has a published price, which is more than any road out of the city can say.

Road numbers, section lengths and 2023 average daily traffic from the CNER Recueil du Trafic Routier 2023; provincial road network and tourism statistics from the Province d'Azilal. Carrier coverage from the Supratours station list and the CTM booking engine, read in Q3 2026.

Five Things Most Visitors Do Not Know About Day Trips From Marrakech

Each line is a fact we could source, with the source in brackets. The negative findings are marked as negative rather than smoothed into confident prose.

  • Supratours runs seven coaches a day to Essaouira and CTM runs one, and the fares differ by five dirhams, so the choice of carrier is a choice of timetable rather than of price (Supratours and CTM booking APIs, read in Q3 2026).
  • There is no train to any destination on this page. Every Marrakech to Essaouira and Marrakech to Ouarzazate service inside the rail operator's own system is coded as a coach, and the rail network does not run south of Marrakech on this corridor (ONCF service ranges, read in Q3 2026).
  • Ouzoud, Azilal, Demnate, Imlil, Asni and Agafay appear in neither the Supratours 177-station network nor CTM's 119-city network, so four of these eight destinations have no scheduled public service at all (both carriers' own station registers).
  • The last leg to Ait Ben Haddou is covered by no official carrier source: the coaches stop at Ouarzazate and the ksar is in neither network (Supratours station list; CTM network list).
  • Merzouga cannot be reached and returned from in a day by any scheduled service. The only itinerary the rail operator will sell is a train to Meknes and a night coach arriving at 06:00 the following morning, 15 h 25 in total (ONCF and Supratours availability API, read in Q3 2026).

The bigger silence sits underneath all five: no Moroccan authority publishes a grand-taxi fare, a stand register or a shared-seat tariff for any route out of Marrakech, which is why this page prints coach fares and tour prices and refuses to print a taxi figure.

Day Trips from Marrakech Questions

Which day trips from Marrakech can you do without a tour?

Essaouira, comfortably, on seven Supratours coaches a day at $10.65 (100 MAD) each way. Ait Ben Haddou, partly: four coaches a day reach Ouarzazate at $11.72 (110 MAD) and the last 30 km is on nobody's timetable. Everything else on this page has either a negotiated shared taxi or no public service at all, which is why the organised days start at $13.27.

What is the cheapest day trip from Marrakech?

The Ourika valley with lunch and the guided waterfall walk at $13.27, followed by the Ouzoud day at $14 and the Essaouira coastal day at $14.82. All three include return transport, which is the part you cannot arrange cheaply yourself on any of those corridors.

Are there day trips from Marrakech by train?

No. Marrakech is the southern terminus of the rail network on this corridor, and every Marrakech to Essaouira or Marrakech to Ouarzazate service inside the rail operator's own booking system is coded as a coach rather than a train. The one place rail plays any part is the long haul east, where the sold itinerary to the Sahara dunes uses a train as far as Meknes and a night coach after that.

How early do day trips from Marrakech leave?

The long ones leave between 07:00 and 08:00, because ten to twelve hours door to door has to start early to finish in daylight. The mountain days leave a little later, around 08:00 to 09:00. The exception is the Agafay evening, which starts in the afternoon and is built around sunset and dinner.

Can you reach the Sahara from Marrakech in a day?

No, and this is the one claim on the subject that can be settled from timetables rather than opinion. The dunes are 553 km away, no scheduled service returns the same day, one carrier does not serve them at all, and the only itinerary the other will sell takes 15 h 25. The stone hills sold as a desert 26.5 km from town are the Agafay, and they are a different landscape entirely.

How many day trips from Marrakech fit into a week?

Two comfortably, three if you accept losing most of a fourth day to recovery. The long single days run ten to twelve hours each and two of them back to back leaves nothing of the city. A workable week is one mountain day, one coastal day and the rest inside the walls, with the itinerary pages covering the city half.

Do day trips from Marrakech include hotel pickup?

Most do, but riads inside the medina are the exception, because vehicles cannot reach many of the lanes. Operators handle it with a meeting point a short walk from the riad, and the three-day Merzouga circuit states that explicitly. Check the listing's meeting-point line rather than assuming a door pickup.

How Many Days Out a Marrakech Stay Actually Holds

One paragraph of routing, and the argument behind it.

On a three-night stay, take one day out and keep the rest for the city. On four or five nights, take two and separate them with a day inside the walls, because two long drives in a row is the commonest way people end a Marrakech trip tired of Morocco rather than of Marrakech. The Sahara is a separate holiday and should be planned as one, at three days minimum.

The order that works: the mountains first, while you still have the energy for a walk; the coast second, on the coach, because it is the day that rewards not being on a schedule; the ksar third if the trip is long enough. And if the heat has beaten you before any of that, the honest answer is the Agafay evening at 26.5 km, which asks nothing of you but a jacket after dark.
