A garden built as a route, not a view

The layout is a walking route through changing plantings, and works of art appear as you turn corners rather than standing on a lawn to be photographed from a distance. That is why the garden's own published visit length is two to three hours: the site is not large, but it is built to be walked slowly and it doubles back on itself.

The cafe on site, the Cafe Marocain Paul Bowles, is part of the visit rather than a service afterthought, and the garden names it after the writer who lived and worked in Morocco for decades. The garden publishes no food prices, so none are printed here.

Why the distance changes the decision

Everything else on the gardens hub can be reached on foot or in a short taxi ride. ANIMA sits about 27 km south along the Ourika and Oukaimeden road, which means an hour of driving in the round trip before you have looked at anything.

So the honest framing is not ANIMA against Le Jardin Secret, a garden inside the walls at $10.65 (100 MAD) that takes 45 minutes. It is ANIMA against a half day of the medina, or against the whole Ourika valley. If you are going out of town anyway, the garden slots into the morning of an Ourika day; if you are not, the drive is the price and only you can decide whether the garden repays it.

Aid al Fitr, at the end of Ramadan, and Aid al Adha are set by the lunar calendar and confirmed in Morocco by the Ministere des Habous et des Affaires Islamiques after the moon is sighted, typically about a day beforehand. So a garden 27 km out of town cannot print next year's closing dates, and it does not pretend to: the visit page carries the closure and the words to be announced.

What that means for a traveller is concrete. If your trip brushes either Aid, do not build a half-day drive around this garden until the announcement has been made, and have the medina as your fallback. The same uncertainty ripples across the city on those two days: transport thins out, many shops shut, and the Ministry monuments give Moroccan nationals free entry on the first day of religious holidays while visitors still pay. One more calendar note, because it catches people out on the way here rather than at the gate: during Ramadan the venues inside the walls cut their hours hard, and Le Jardin Secret shuts at 16:30. ANIMA publishes no Ramadan variation at all, only the Aid closures, so its 09:00 to 18:00 stands unless it says otherwise.

The pick-up point is the Koutoubia car park, the Parking and Lavage behind the Koutoubia mosque, which is a five-minute walk from Jemaa el-Fna. There are two runs a day and the timetable is fixed.

The rule: the shuttle is for ticket holders, it must be reserved online, capacity is limited and the garden asks for at least 24 hours' notice. Groups of more than ten are asked to make contact in advance. Turning up at the car park without a reservation is not a plan.

Set that against the garden's own recommended two to three hours inside and the morning run is the one that fits. The afternoon run gives you the better light on the sculpture but leaves you tighter than the garden's own guidance, and in June to August it puts you in the garden through the hottest part of the day: the thirty-year ERA5 series gives July a mean daily high of 36.6C.

If the shuttle is full, the alternatives are a taxi with a driver who waits, which is a negotiation with no published tariff behind it, or a hire car. Adults pay 140 MAD, printed by the garden as 14 EUR. Children aged 12 to 16 pay 60 MAD, printed as 6 EUR. Children from birth to eleven are free. Local guests and residents pay 60 MAD, and note the wording: the garden's reduced category names local guests and residents together, where Le Jardin Secret publishes its lowest rate for Moroccan citizens and does not extend it to foreign residents. Two private gardens, two different definitions of who counts as local.

In dollars, at the rate this guide uses, an adult ticket is $14.91 and a child of 12 to 16 is $6.39. That puts ANIMA between Le Jardin Secret at $10.65 (100 MAD) and the Jardin Majorelle at $18.11 (170 MAD) on price, and a long way outside both on travel time.

Cards are accepted on site, Visa and Mastercard, which matters 27 km from town where the alternative is having guessed your cash needs correctly that morning. What a day in the city costs overall, cash and card, is set out on the Marrakech costs page.

The three routings below are ours, built on the garden's own visit length, its published shuttle timetable and the 27 km distance. None of them leaves room for the Ourika valley on the same day in any relaxed sense.

Families should note the garden's own line about shorter loops for younger visitors: it is the rare Marrakech venue that says something specific about children rather than just publishing a child fare. Marrakech with kids collects the rest.

The garden states that wheelchair users have limited access to parts of the garden. That is the whole of it: no route description, no gradients, no surfaces, no accessible-toilet note and no concession fare tied to disability.

Compare that with the two fuller statements in the city. Le Jardin Secret states that everything except the tower and one of its two cafes is accessible, and gives free and priority entry to wheelchair users and to blind visitors with their carers. The Jardin Majorelle states that the garden is wheelchair accessible and gives complimentary admission on production of a disability card. Everywhere else in this guide publishes nothing at all, and the Ben Youssef Madrasa asks the question in its own FAQ and leaves the answer panel empty.

ANIMA belongs on a third or fourth day, once the medina monuments are done and you want the city off your shoulders for a morning. Take the 09:30 shuttle, be back at the Koutoubia by about 13:00, and give the afternoon to Gueliz or to a hammam rather than another ticketed door. If you only have three days, the three-day itinerary spends that half day in the Ourika Valley instead, which is the better trade for a first visit.
